What do you get when you cross a compassionate spirit with a mother’s heart, adding in legal expertise and a gift for leadership? You get Lisa McManus, Legal Counsel at HSLDA Canada.
Lisa wears many hats in her personal and work lives that uniquely equip her for her role at HSLDA. Her care and concern for others has led her to make many powerful life choices, including being a founding director of Safe Families Canada, a ministry designed to extend and strengthen the community safety net for at-risk families, and to reduce the number of children entering the child welfare system.
Lisa and her husband, Greg, are parents to six children, some biological, some adopted, and some fostered. Extending their family through adoption and fostering was not quite enough, however, and so Lisa and Greg also have opened their home to various international students through a homestay program.
Of course, there is also the business side to Lisa: she is the sole practitioner at McManus Law Office, and she is a principal in McManus Contracting Inc., her husband’s construction company.
Somehow over the years, Lisa also found the time to homeschool her children!
Looking at the details of Lisa’s life, it will be no surprise that Lisa is passionate about family, homeschooling, and ensuring that families needs are protected. She has not only the heart for this, but also the legal prowess to advocate for HSLDA members in conflict with school boards or social services. She monitors legislative changes across Canada to watch for threats to homeschooling freedoms.
Lisa McManus is certainly an expert on family matters and legal issues that HSLDA is grateful to have on the team.
Lisa will take you on a tour of the beginnings of the modern home education movement, the stages of its development, where we are today and where it seems likely to take us tomorrow.
